THE YOUNG VIC MENTOR TRAINING X3 SESSIONS FEBRUARY 2021

IMG_4966.jpeg

"Our innovative Young Mentors programme pairs leaders from any industry with a Young Mentor between the ages of 18 and 25. Over the course of five one-to-one sessions, the Young Mentors will share their knowledge and world-view as a young person, offering mentees an alternative lens through which to view their work.

The programme is designed to pair mentees with mentors who have different lived and professional experience to themselves. Our aim is to encourage cross-generational conversation and learning and to make space for people in positions of high responsibility to explore new and divergent ways of thinking about the world.

The Young Mentor training was delivered by Nicholai La Barrie and Nicole Yershon."

I'm full of wisdom...I'm also a proud member of The Play Collective 40 people across 30 countries - Over the past 6 and a half months while the world was turned upside down our Play Collective developed one of the most innovative products yet for business transformation. The key ingredient is PLAY as the most powerful technology for innovation and transformation

20 members of the Global Play Collective came together to productise a human first methodology designed to take business teams through the multiple "gates" to reimagine their future. Since March 2019 three of us have developed a side hustle called Re-Greece - Why Re-Greece? When the pandemic of 2020 created chaos in the world, even the strong felt defeated, deflated, and derailed. The Re-Greece experience has been curated and designed to enable you to join, share and learn with 12 like-minded thinkers and doers from the creative and marketing industries. Over seven nights and seven days against the backdrop of Greece (one of the most resilient countries in the World); we'll explore, rest, replenish and just as importantly, help you redefine your next chapter. CHANGE EVERYONE’S ZOOM BACKGROUND TO SOMETHING THAT INSPIRES THEM!

My own way of inspiring myself daily …. 1 hour each day, scanning the environment - sharing is caring - Quotes by Alvin Toffler below - challenges your conventions, reminds me i don’t know everything, forces me to change my world view, removes me from an echo chamber. It’s all very well to nod, but it needs to move you, challenged you or made you a better person and motivated, changed

What quotes inspire them? WHY? What would they share…..

TO BE COVERED IN SESSION 2

Session 2: PREPARATION - Wednesday 10th February- delivered by Nicole/Nicholai

What is mentoring; establishing an effective mentor/mentee relationship; nuts and bolts.

HOMEWORK SET - 5 mins. Please let the group read a Quote that they have found over the last week that most Inspires & Resonates.

NY speaking… My Principles GO THROUGH FRAMEWORK 1

IMG_4867.jpeg
  1. Mentoring is never one way. It has to be a dialogue between people based on trust.

  2. Feedback is a two-way street. I want to stimulate discussion.

  3. Trust is the first base - only buildable through a safe space for a genuine conversation.

  4. Creating trust comes from listening fully, leaving spaces in the discussion - respect for the ’other’ - clarity of question and relevance of case study or story of merit.

  5. It's easy to talk about listening but few are very good at hearing. Hearing is when you can replay what the other person actually said.

  6. Hearing allows us to offer a valuable response or add. Adding is what works. Adding is what a mentor does.

  7. There is always power in a framework. A framing that shows the dimensions of possibility.

Coaching is about improving performance - usually aimed at those already on the job. That's not what this is about. It's about mentoring.

Mentoring is about developing people on a life journey - it's a more holistic approach to those seeking betterment and through objective and often a more holistic perspective.

BREAKOUT GROUP X10 MINS - DISCUSS FEARLESSNESS OR COURAGE AND WHEN YOU HAVE HAD TO CALL UPON IT.

FEARLESS MANIFESTO - they should choose their own Manifesto….. Because it’s about taking action, not just words

NY - Being A Mentor - GO THROUGH FRAMEWORK 2

IMG_4868.jpeg
  1. I describe mentoring as encouragement through an exchange of experience and lessons learned

  2. But it's not about me. Although I have a million stories I'm not there to promote me.

  3. My experiences must be triggered first by the mentee’s needs. So - REALLY LISTENING.

  4. Once I've heard the individual trigger - (question or situation) the task is to draw on an inspiring way to phrase and frame the lesson or suggestion - to offer new possibilities - for them.

  5. This demands some time spent knowing them - in discovery. Listening and hearing.

  6. Mentoring is to polish and enhance the diamond - to assist that development process and by some means transform the knowledge.

So my process goes something like this.

  • Discovery - Identifying the measure of the mentee (in this case the mentor of other mentees) - For example - what are they like, what have they done, what's their style, sense and feel - where do they identify their own strengths and weaknesses? What are they looking to do, how do they plan to proceed? What are their techniques, tools and approaches? How do they cope with challenges, silences, gaps in knowledge? Can they hear? Do they listen? Can they be coherent with their own storytelling? Are they comfortable with silences? Will they be OK being open to not knowing? Can they learn from those in different fields and experiences who will be younger/older? Do they convey trust and confidence?

  • Development - Sharing experiences - sharing examples of what's worked in specific cases. Describing the power of preparation and expectation setting. Making sure the channels of communication are in place. Learning from others and curious to find out more.

  • Tools - Using frameworks with mentees. Having structure (not boring agendas) techniques that can help with (EG) Goal setting - hearing the mentee’s goals and asking ’why?’ and ’so what?’ and ’so that?’ and understanding the answers. Getting to the root cause and not solving the wrong problems - challenging constructively. Making it clear where the scope sits and explaining expectations - all these things can be better for structure.

MAKE SURE I FINISH 6PM - 5 MIN BREAK

NICHOLAI - 10 MINS

10 MINS CONTRACTING BREAKOUT GROUPS - WHAT WOULD IT BE

BOUNDARIES & SAFE GUARDING.

HOMEWORK - TO PLAN IN DETAIL SESSION WITH THEIR MENTEE & GUIDELINE ⅚ SESSIONS WHAT THEY WOULD WANT TO TALK ABOUT OVER VIEW

NICHOLAI OR NY TO Go Through Inspire framework 3 - initially inspired by IKIGAI

Ikigai (生き甲斐, pronounced [ikiɡai]) is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being". The word refers to having a direction or purpose in life, that which makes one's life worthwhile, and towards which an individual takes spontaneous and willing actions giving them satisfaction and a sense of meaning to life.

INSPIRE FRAMEWORK IDEAS….

Utilizing social media by following people/companies I would never usually come across. Give yourself 30 mins or 1 hour each day to ‘explore’ - get lost and listen to your body when it gets excited or inspired by reading or viewing something.

Session 3: ACTION - Wednesday 17th February - delivered by Nicholai

Getting prepared; structuring your sessions; practical tools, techniques and behaviours.
